The latest efforts toward addressing the limitations and drawbacks of five selected visible light active nanomaterials in order to improve the performances of their corresponding photoanodes for solar water oxidation are discussed. Strategies for efficiently harvesting visible light energy for the above nanomaterials are also summarized in this work.
