Novel nano/micro-structured Si/CNT/C with numerous pores was synthesized from a low-cost SiO2 precursor for an advanced anode material in lithium ion batteries. The hierarchical composite displayed stable capacity of ca. 2100 mA h g-1 for 100 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1 and outstanding rate capability up to 5 A g-1 .
