Highly photoluminescent silicon nanocrystals for rapid, label-free and recyclable detection of mercuric ions

A recyclable sensor for mercuric ions based on photoluminescent silicon nanocrystals is developed. Hg2+ ions attenuate the fluorescence of the nanocrystal solution with remarkably high selectivity, and reusability of the sensor can be realized by the addition of biothiols.
