The fuorescence of carbon dots (CDs) was found to be quenched by chlorophenols (CPs) in a pKa dependent mode. The quenching can be attributed to the formation of a non-fuorescent intermediate between the electron-rich phenolic oxygen anion of CPs and electron-deficient carbonyl groups on the CDs surface.
